Exhibit Columbus announces the 2019 Design Presentations

Following a highly successful and critically acclaimed inaugural exhibition in 2017 and the groundbreaking 2018 National Symposium Design, Community, and Progressive Preservation, Exhibit Columbus announces the first public event of the 2019 exhibition: the J. Irwin and Xenia S. Miller Prize Design Presentations on Saturday, January 19.

The 2018-19 Miller Prize Winners experienced Columbus this fall and visited the sites where they will create temporary outdoor installations that respond to the context of Columbus’ built heritage and the curatorial theme of Good Design in the Community. Drawing inspiration from the title of the 1986 exhibition mounted by the National Building Museum when J. Irwin Miller became the first living American inducted into the Museum’s Hall of Fame, the 2019 exhibition will expand on the theme in a tangible way as participants explore how architecture, art, and design can improve people’s lives and make cities better places to live.

“This is a rare chance to experience the creative process firsthand,” said Anne Surak, director of exhibitions for Exhibit Columbus. “The Design Presentations not only provide an exciting opportunity to witness acclaimed international designers present their concepts in a public format––but it also gives everyone a look at what is to come.”

The Design Presentations also feature the 2018–19 University Design Research Fellows. Representing eight universities, these fellows will translate their innovative research into installations and experiences that explore ways in which architecture and design can improve cities and advance new practices in design and fabrication.

“We’re growing a network of university professors in the middle of the country that are unified in their interest to advance architecture and design,” said Surak. “It will be exciting to have the university fellows present the same day as the Miller Prize Winners.”
